Jay Garner, we barely knew thee! The rumour mill is abuzz with news that America's viceroy in Iraq will soon be dumped. Short of appearing on Fox News to declare Iraqi reconstruction a flop, this is as close as the White House might come to an admission that it's plans have come apart faster than the Special Republican Guard in Baghdad. Word from one source has it that Paul Bremer, a Reagan-era career diplomat, has been tapped to pick up the pieces. Bremer is an ex-business parter of his ex-boss Henry Kissinger, and the fact that one unnamed State Department hack saw fit to describe him as a "voracious opportunist with voracious ambitions" may not bode well for either the Bush ultras desperate for some smidgen of success, or the Mesopotamian hoi polloi currently at their mercy.
